Wine of the Month - April 2012
2011 Chateau Les Arromans, Entre-Deux-Mers, Bordeaux Blanc - $12.99
Lost in all the hoopla surrounding their world-conquering reds ($2000 for
a bottle of ’09 Lafite anyone?) is the fact that the Bordelais produce delicious whites as well. Unfairly and often overlooked, these can be unctuous and full-bodied at the high-end, or refreshing and approachable at more “normal human” prices.
Chateau Les Arromans is a small (14 hectares) family holding using organic farming and traditional methods to craft delicious, well-priced wines. The Duffau family has a winner here with this blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon. The Sauvignon shows through with nice mineral tension and ripe citrus, the Semillon adding a dimension of richness and tropical notes that combine beautifully.
This is a tremendous everyday white that will match well with grilled shellfish, creamy risottos, grilled mushrooms, Indian cuisine, pate and cheeses.
