Wine of the Month - February 2012
2008 Cannonau Sardegna, Feudi della Medusa - $14.99
We have wanted to feature a Cannonau (Sardinia’s ancient version of the Grenache grown in France, Spain and elsewhere) for a while, but pricing usually gets in the way. However, when this affordable little gem appeared recently, we couldn’t resist.
Grown on rocky but porous granite and limestone soils in the south of the island, the
grapes benefit from the typically Mediterranean climate (dry in the summer, wet in the winter and windy, always windy...).
This Cannonau shows lots of ripe red fruits on the nose, but with distinctive floral and mineral components that make it so interesting. It shows that mineral character on the palate as well, but this is balanced with juiciness and refreshing acidity. A great red for grilled lamb, goat or salty hard cheeses like Parmigiano or Pecorino.
