Wine of the Month - June 2012
2011 Franz Etz Gruner Veltliner “Gruner” (1 Liter) - $13.99
We’ve been down this path before, but we love these stonking great bottles of Austrian Gruner, and it’s the time of year when refreshment becomes a priority, so here we are again.
Gruner Veltliner’s nervy acidity, expressive fruit and incredible versatility with all sorts of food has made it a favorite on the finest wine lists. It is however, the packaging of such qualities in a liter-sized bottle that has assured Gruner’s acceptance in the wider market.
So here’s a version from this 4th generation producer in the Kamptal, Franz Etz. This is estate-bottled, abounding in freshness and snap, has layers of complex fruit, quaffably low alchohol and as the back-label says, “perky acidity.” This is high-brow winemaking in er…low-brow packaging. Drink up on a hot day/evening with anything from an artichoke soup to cheeses to spicy Korean bbq. Prost!
