2010 Costieres de Nimes Blanc, Mas Grand Plagniol - $12.99
We perhaps unfairly overlook the southern Rhone valley when it comes to white wine. The glorious reds of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas bask in their deserved limelight, but there are white treasures to be discovered as well.
The Greeks farmed vineyards in this area (SW of Nimes) before the Romans settled in. Wines have been produced here for over two millennia and were particularly popular in the time of the Avignon Popes (1308-1377).
This delicious new release from Mas Grand Plagniol blends Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Viognier. It displays ample honeysuckle, apricot and white peach on the nose, shows plenty of crisp acidity to back up the luscious fruit and finishes with a refreshing mineral tang. A great match for the cheese course, grilled langoustines, sardines or even just gazing at the sunset.
