If you love sharing a tidbit with a captive audience, then I have the wine for you. Behold: Edelvernatsch a dry, light-bodied red with pleasant acidity from Northern Italy. It benefits from a slight chill and pairs great with a turkey sandwich. Think of it as a lighter Pino. It also set me on a Wikipedia deep dive on the company dime…
So get this: this wine is from Sudtirol – better known as Alto Adige – which is located where Italy and Austria share a border. For centuries the region was part of the Austrio-Hungarian Empire, until it was annexed by Italy at the conclusion of the First World War in 1918. So while it’s part of Italy, everyone there still speaks German. That’s why the label looks wild. Like the grape is a local varietal known as Schiava, but its German name is Vernatsch, hence the name Edelvernatsch. Isn’t that nuts? Don’t you want to buy one and tell the world?? Hey! Don’t go to the register. Finish reading first. C’mon, I’m giving you gold here. You take this on a date and repeat what I just said verbatim and woah buddy, you’re not gonna have a problem getting another, I promise you that… Alright, you’re holding up the line. Go ahead and pay. |
