August is hot, so no beating around the bush, for this month we need a crisp, lively wine to match with outdoor eating, slake the thirst and be generally summer-appropriate. Enter this wonderfully complex white from Penedes, north of Barcelona. This small estate is practicing organic and biodynamic viticulture(certified) and their wines are also vegan. Of course this means only so much if the wine itself ain’t no good…which isn’t the case here…this wine really shines.
Made from 100% Xarel.lo (pron.“Shar-el-o”) from old vines on sandy and slate soils near the Mediterranean, the wine sees a short skin contact in stainless steel tanks, then a further 3 months of aging on the fine lees. The result: A youthful, vibrantly fruited wine with sweet herbal scents and hints of fennel on the nose. On the palate, there are all sorts of fruit complexities going on…green apple, pear, lemon zest, pineapple skin and hints of jasmine. A light herbal character persists on the finish, along with pleasing minerality.
This is a great match for a variety of cheeses, grilledwhite fish, shellfish, summer salads, fatty charcuterie or your own takeon Tapas. Stay cool, stay safe and do something good for yourself…drink a bit of this lovely wine this month.
