It’s hard to say whether or not 2020 will be an improvement on 2019, but we are going to try and remember that, in the grand scheme of things how lucky we are, count our many blessing and celebrate something damn it! Beverage of choice for said shindig should be sparkling wine, preferably something groovy and affordable, given the wallet-busting nature of the season. We found this gem recently and couldn’t believe the price given the complexity, the fine bubbles and the “weight” of the wine. For what it’s worth, The Wall Street Journal tasting panel recently picked this as their #1 Cava in a blind tasting.
This old estate in Penedes sources the typical varietals for this Cava (Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Parellada) from their biodynamically-farmed vineyards. The secondary bottle fermentation (a minimum of 16 months)is undertaken deep in the estate’s 18th century cellars. There is a silkiness and sophistication to this wine that belies the price.
Hints of brioche and floral notes show on the nose, the palate a fine mousse of grapefruit, Anjou pear and a slight flintiness. Raise a glass high by all means, but remember this wine will also match superbly with all sorts of holiday spreads…cheeses of all sorts, those yummy pastry appetizer things that seem to emerge at this time of year, charcuterie, caviar and those holidays desserts you might regret later…
We wish you all a fruitful and peaceful holiday season. Thank you for all your support this past year!
