Are we celebrating anything anymore? 2021, another rollercoaster of a year with all the attendant hopeful signs, false dawns, general craziness all over, positive news from one front then dashed hopes from another…’twas ever thus? Or does it feel different now? Who can tell anymore..?
Might we suggest a collective deep breath, some positive thoughts and perhaps some selective drinking to get us through the holidays and beyond?
A lovely dry sparkling wine could be the answer to the drinking part, so here’s a great example from Alsace in northeastern France. If you can get past the slightly blingy retro-80’s label, this is some seriously delicious bubbly at a great price. Despite being overshadowed by their more expensive cousins in neighboring Champagne, these are wines that deserve more attention.
Sourced from sustainably farmed vines that grow in alluvial soils, this is a classic dry sparkling wine of sophisticated character. Vinified in the traditional method, aged for 24 months (twice the minimum for the appellation) this is a blend of Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois and Pinot Gris. The wine shows great complexity on the nose, throwing out dried apricot, white peach and honeysuckle aromas. The palate displays a fine, delicate mousse, notes of apricots, nectarines, honey and a crisp acidity that frames a very Champagne-like finish.
A terrific value, this will serve you well if you do feel like celebrating, but perhaps more usefully, this will match with all sorts of appetizers, rich creamy cheeses, charcuterie, pastries and yes, caviar.
We owe our survival and ability to continue in business toall of you, so we thank you heartily for your amazing support throughout 2021! Here’s to 2022.
