We just had to go to the Spanish well again this month to bring you a quite outstanding value. We taste a lot of wine, as you can imagine, and it is easy to slip into a jaded state as yet another pedestrian, overpriced offering slides over one’s palate. There are moments however, when we experience genuine surprise… a unique or interesting new offering, a wine of unimpeachable quality or in the case of this wine, incredulity at its low price. It’s such fun to discover such a wine and share it with you… an estate-bottled, Demeter certified biodynamic Tempranillo from a renowned producer in heart of the Ribera del Duero (north central Spain).
From vines that are up to 100 years old, planted in complex soils (limestone, sand, clay, silex and quartz), fruit is hand-harvested, the fermentations are spontaneous and there is minimal use of oak. The result? A wine of exceptional fragrance (redcurrant, berries, light earthy spice, floral notes) and a palate just bursting with character… think of raspberry preserves and mixed red berries, vibrant balancing acidity, ripe tannins and some minerality on the finish. We still don’t understand how such quality is available at this price, but this was one of those lovely surprises.
Match with charcuterie (Jamon Iberico if you feel extravagant), soft pungent cheeses or almost any grilled thing you can come up with.
