Occasionally we come across wines that seem to have an original expression in the truest sense…they don’t really taste like anything else that springs to mind. This very interesting 100% Tempranillo from Bajo Aragon (about halfway between Barcelona and Madrid as the crow flies) is a product of a dedicated family of fourth generation winemakers who are committed to organic viticulture and keeping things simple in the winery (natural yeasts, very low sulfur and no filtration).
Grandfather Antonio Aznar had his vineyards burned in the Spanish civil war, so this family’s story is one of survival and hard-won recovery. Grandson Victor was the driving force in a move to organic farming and the results speak for themselves.
On the nose this shows intense aromas of Blackberries, strawberries, licorice, cocoa, minerals and sage brush…it’s complex, let’s just say that. The palate is a velvety riot of lush fruits, some savory elements and again some minerals and dark licorice…this is not typical Tempranillo in our estimation, but that’s what makes it intriguing. A delicious wine with great presence, you could serve this with heartier fare…chorizo, strong cheeses or a “Cocido” stew..
