We had another candidate lined up for this month, but then this innocuous-looking bottle crossed our desk. Not expecting to get terribly excited about an inexpensive Cabernet Sauvignon from Bordeaux, we gave it a quick taste…what a surprise…quite a revelation as it turns out.
This old family-run estate sources fruit from a selection of carefully vetted growers around their village. Sustainable and organic practices are a priority for winemaker Philippe Moute and there is an emphasis on simple winemaking techniques (natural fermentations when possible, only stainless steel and concrete used for fermenting and aging this wine). The Reserve is a selection of their best Cabernet Sauvignon plots.
This is a wonderful, approachable, pure expression of Cabernet Sauvignon that shows dark berry, cassis and black plum on the nose. The palate is plush with lifted, high-toned fruit that is framed by ripe soft tannins. This is a remarkably sophisticated wine for the price and an ideal match for a hearty stew, salty
hard cheeses, grilled beer brats or other wintery fare (even when it’s warm out…)
