Hard to believe it’s been a year since the bloody bug upended life for all of us. We are so grateful to still be able to open our doors and provide some sort of wine-based solace to so many loyal customers. We try to find pleasure in the small things and hopefully this month’s selection will help in that regard. This is one of those wines that presents itself as simple, but seems to radiate a joyful juiciness and all around cheer.
Dominique Piron’s family have been farming their land in Beaujolais since the 16th century and he is currently employing organic and sustainable practices. We’ve loved his wines for years. This wine is actually a blend of 95% Gamay and 5% Gamaret. Gamaret was created by crossing Gamay with Reichensteiner in the hopes of being authorized for use in Beaujolais, but this never happened. There are a few plots of Gamaret in existence and Dominique has sourced some to add to his beloved Gamay to produce a plump, darker and perhaps more fun wine that is aimed at heartier foods that are popular in the region.
While offering ample dark fruits on the nose and palate(think pomegranate, cranberry, blackcurrant), there is a refreshing, lively character overall here. Match this with beef or pork stews, soft stinky cheeses, roast chicken or charcuterie, spicy or otherwise.
