A strange anniversary this month…it’s two years on from the arrival of the damn virus. Surely this is an excuse to drink something decent and reflect, if not celebrate. Too much has passed to get one’s head around (awful loss, inconvenience, stress, division and any sense of normalcy), but we must try to
forge ahead and enjoy some small pleasures along the way.
We thought this lovely red from the south of Spain (Jumilla) might help. It ticks a lot of boxes that make it legit in our eyes…Ungrafted old bush vines (some go back to 1872), high altitude (2700ft), meticulous
organic viticulture and simple, traditional winemaking result in a very characterful wine that somehow doesn’t break the bank.
Monastrell (a.k.a.Mourvedre) typically produces a pretty robust wine and this is no exception. There is a certain muscularity that backs up wonderful ripe dark fruit as well as a bracing minerality. The wine presents as fresh and balanced so will pair with a wide variety of foods…try this with grilled lamb, hearty pork stew, salty, crumbly cheeses, a paella or even just a few almonds and olives.
