Trying to stay positive in the face of the onslaught of dire news, we leap into a new year and will try to keep it together. How about a groovy “natural” wine from Chile to peak your interest and provide momentary distraction from the freak-show that we seem to inhabit. Having avoided some of the more esoteric and weird natural wines (organic viticulture, wild yeasts and no added sulfur) on offer to us, this delicious Cabernet Franc from Curico in Chile was a very pleasant surprise.
The Echeverria family has been active in winemaking and agriculture since 1740, but a move to organic
viticulture and real quality took place in the 1990s. They were the first Chilean winery to sell wine to Harrods in London. They ferment and age the Cabernet Franc in stainless steel tanks only. The result; a fresh, lively version of the grape that shows bright aromas of black cherry and fresh plum on the nose. The palate is fresh and persistent, with lush floral and raspberry fruit flavors, silky tannins and a long finish.
As a natural wine it shows a slight cloudiness, but presents in a clean, straightforward way and would pair well with grilled meats, hearty winter stews, goat’s milk cheeses and savory pastries. Let’s eat and drink safely at home with our loved ones and give thanks for our health. Happy New Year everyone!
