Searching for a white that might define this summer, we recently stumbled over this fabulous white Bordeaux. While perhaps not as prominent in the wine zeitgeist (the cool kids all want Vinho Verde, Orange wine and “natural” stuff these days), whites from Bordeaux can provide excellent versatility with food, great complexity, richness and racy acidity all at the same time! It’s hard to understand why these wines are so overlooked.
Situated in Sauternes, this producer does make an exceptional sweet wine (Chateau Roumieu-Lacoste), but here we have a dry white from 48 year-old vines on the estate. The old vines and a mix of clay
and limestone soil contribute to a level of complexity that is unusual at this price. The high proportion of Semillon (60%)in the blend along with Sauvignon Blanc(35%) and Muscadelle(5%) creates a rich, full, aromatic mid-palate to complement a clean finish.
This is a perfect go-to white that pairs well with anything from fish to poultry, summer picnic fare, charcuterie, curries, tacos and any old cheese you care to throw at it. Happy 4th and beyond
