Long one of our favorite winemakers, Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon is simply one of the wine world’s treasures. An erudite, passionate advocate for innovation in wine (he was first to use screwcaps for premium wines, he has consistently strived to improve vineyard practices and transparency in labeling among many other initiatives), he has always produced distinctive, soulful wines and this terrific white is no exception.
Picpoul or “lip-stinger”, a favorite grape in the southwest of France is known for its tingling acidity and bracing salinity. This version by Randall is sourced from Arroyo Secco, blessed by cooling breezes from nearby Carmel. Textural and complex, this shows orange blossom, apricot and grapefruit on the nose and palate. Mineral and herbal notes frame a pretty full mouthfeel that lingers very nicely. This is a perfect summer white that begs for shellfish, grilled herbed branzino, soft pungent cheeses or a medley of grilled vegetables..
