Back to the rose well again this month, which might not be the most original thing to do at this time of year, but we had to squeeze this one in somehow. We’ve been tasting a lot of rose recently (barely scratching the surface of the oceans of the stuff that’s pouring into the market), and were very taken with this fresh, lovely offering from a smallish domain in the Languedoc. Abundant sunshine, roaring wind (Le Mistral) and chalk-based, sand-clay soils conspire to produce ideal conditions for hands-off viticulture and healthy vines…in this case an unusual cross of Grenache and Malbec called
Caladoc. A grape not qualified for the AOC system, this is a lowly Pays d’Oc on the label, but it delivers much higher quality than the price suggests.
A classic southern French rose, this shows a light pink color, honeysuckle, white peach and watermelon on the nose, a vibrant, juicy mouthful of cherry, raspberry, peach and a pleasant spicy note on the finish. A lively, dry wine, this rose could be the perfect “ice-breaker” for a warm evening gathering.
Serve with charcuterie, fresh shellfish, grilled meats, tacos and all sorts of other summer fare…
