We will confess to not getting fully onboard with the whole “orange wine thing” lately. Too much hype, too few orange wines that we honestly liked and a general distaste for following trends just for the sake of it…However, we will give every wine that we taste a fair shake, and this one was such a surprise. Put aside that this is wine in a can (these days this is not a disqualifying factor) and revel in the whole joyous and delicious experience that this wine delivers.
Think of an orange wine as a white wine made like a red wine…it receives extended skin contact (3 days in this case) resulting in a darker “orange” color, more obvious texture on the palate and a selection of flavors that are not typical for a white wine. This Pinot Gris has quite a reddish-orange appearance, tons of vibrant stone fruit and citrus peel on the nose, but no hints of oxidation that can occasionally afflict orange wines. The palate is a vibrant, juicy mouthful of apple, quince, peach and a pleasant spicy note on the finish.
A lively, dry wine, this orange wine could be the perfect “ice-breaker” for a warm evening gathering/
hunker down. One of our favorite recent finds for the summer months ahead. Serve with charcuterie, fresh shellfish, grilled meats, tacos and all sorts of other summer fare.
