You might have noticed that we really like Vinho Verde around here. We’ve featured a few in this space and this one just had to get highlighted. Vinho Verde’s reputation for being light, spritzy, insubstantial and simple can sometimes be deserved, but in the right hands, these wines can be complex, delicious and perhaps even “serious”.
Senor Mendes is a revered and pioneering winemaker who makes this more substantial Vinho Verde
the right way; carefully selected vines of Avesso, Loureiro and Alvarinho from only granite soils and indigenous yeast ferments in tanks with a 4-month elevage on the lees. The result is a fresh, well-constructed wine that shows delicious fruit-weight and fine, crisp acidity. There’s no fizzy frivolity here…there is breadth to this wine, but it also shows some tension and is loaded with character.
We are always looking for an ideal daily white wine that can serve many roles…a refreshing pick-me-up at the end of the day, a match with cheeses, shellfish, shrimp tacos, salads, grilled poultry or just a wine to convince your friends to stop drinking bloody Pinot Grigio all the time.
