We select another interesting wine from Spain this month and to be honest it’s partially about battling the forces of inflation…Spanish wines are just incredible value given their character, so why not? It’s hard to think of another country that offers such a diverse selection of delicious sub-$10 wine that is not industrially-produced or intended for the chain supermarkets.
Case in point, this intriguing little red from Almansa in southeastern Spain. This is sourced from organically-farmed 20 year old Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet) and Syrah vines on mountain sites with abundant limestone in the soils. The wine shows minerality, red fruits and hints of violets on the nose and presents in a slightly dry, restrained way on the palate. There is plenty of fruit here however, with dark cherry and pomegranate balanced with noticeable notes of limestone and just hints of oak.
This would be a great match for richer cheeses and fatty charcuterie, along with hearty stews, grilled
vegetables or even tomato-based pastas. Just to emphasize again, the wine is super-affordable, and it’s also vegan.
