Back to basics this month…this was just another of those wines we taste through on a regular basis…an inexpensive red from the east of Italy from an excellent importer etc. We always taste first then ask about cost...this was a real surprise when the price was revealed.
This is a wonderful, attractive red that is approachable, a delight to drink and a fantastic value.
This has been a family-run estate since 1925. Not a micro-producer by any means, but they turn out wines of integrity and typicity. This isn’t a big, chunky Montepulciano layered with oak tannins (there are a lot of these cluttering the market), but an open, fruit forward red that shows lively acidity and verve. Red cherry, plum and some sweet spice are on the nose, the palate a soft and juicy one, held together with ripe tannins and enough acidity to keep things interesting.
Serve this with any old pasta dish, charcuterie, roasted pork or lamb. Serve it in a proper glass; serve it in a tumbler. Makes no difference. This is a wine that inflicts minimum damage on your wallet and delivers real quality… something to celebrate in these unusual times.
