Our recent tasting has been focused on finding autumnal wines, which given our local climate, perhaps shows that we love the idea of fall as a concept…but, to hell with it, we have forged ahead anyway. If things cool down, then this gorgeous little Cabernet Franc will work with all sorts of hearty, chilly-day grub, but if it stays a-roasting, then you can chill this red to refresh the proceedings nicely.
This is a wine crafted for the importer Martine’s Wines (always a great source of excellent wine) by the great Henry Marionnet in Touraine. He sources fruit from a selection of growers that are at a minimum sustainably farming and vinifies simply in stainless steel tanks. There is partial carbonic-maceration, resulting in such a fresh, energetic wine. This cooperative approach helps to keep costs down and the wine is an absolute bargain.
Dark ruby and translucent in appearance, the nose is effusive with red and black cherry, wet limestone and floral notes. The Palate is fruit-driven (cherries again), juicy and really approachable. There is some intensity of flavor here, but the wine is never ponderous. There is lively, balancing acidity and an effortless finish showing mineral, stony notes again. Match this with goat’s milk cheese tartlets, a pork and mushroom stew or even grilled fish if you want to chill it down.
