We’ve all managed to somehow chug along for another month in the reality-distortion field that is our life. We thought we should sort of celebrate and introduce you to a happy, easy-going red to drink in September and beyond…We seem to derive disproportionate pleasure finding these value-priced gems, because after all, we are all feeling the pinch and every little saving means a lot.
This family run estate in Castilla La Mancha (slap bang in the middle of Spain) has been making wines since the 18th century. More recently (2002) a move to organic and biodynamic viticulture and winemaking as well as other sustainable practices has reaped the reward of high quality, expressive fruit and a true sense of terroir.
This stainless steel and concrete fermented Tempranillo (no oak here) shows a brightness on the nose (red cherry, mineral and strawberry) and a openness on the palate. There is juiciness here along with an appealing acidity that keeps the wine lively…this is a red that could take a slight chill if things are heating up outside. Versatile and very well-priced, this would match with some wonderful Spanish Jamon, pungent cheeses, grilled poultry and seafood. It would even work with a bowl of salty almonds as you watch the news and survey the wreckage…Hang in there.
