We are always on the lookout for that elusive “unicorn” of wine; an inexpensive California Pinot Noir that really delivers an authentic California Pinot Noir experience…something with a sense of place, not generic. We were delighted and surprised to taste this recently…a delicious Russian River Pinot Noir at an absurd price. How could we not feature it up front?
This wine comes from Neil Koch, a young winemaker who cut his teeth at such luminary wineries as Seavey, Bryant Family and Lewis Cellars. His experience shows in a sophisticated, supple wine that offers incredible value given the fruit’s origins. Russian River Pinot Noirs can often be “enthusiastically priced” given the area’s reputation, but Neil and his team have obviously sourced some great fruit at a good price, and the winemaking is exemplary.
Showing the typical dark hues of a Russian River Pinot, this shows ample cherry, cassis and five spice on the nose. Soft red fruits on the palate are really nicely balanced with lively acidity and just a smidge of tannin. This is a very tasty Pinot at an everyday price. The Dude abides…
Match this with seared Ahi tuna, salmon, rosemary and garlic-marinated roast chicken or your cheeses of choice.
But not a White Russian.
